Our Girls’ Journey
When we founded Wessington Juniors in 2022, our dream was to create a club where everybody felt welcome.
From the very beginning, we were proud to see girls playing alongside the boys - something that has always been part of who we are as a club. Many of those girls have thrived in mixed teams, but we also recognise that not everyone wants to follow the same pathway.
That’s why, in 2025, we began our journey to create a dedicated girls’ section: the Wessington Wildcats. We started with fun and friendly sessions for Year 1 & 2 girls at Point4, and numbers quickly grew. Under the brilliant guidance of our coaching team - Laura & Nicki, supported by Ash — the Wildcats have already created a fantastic buzz, full of smiles, energy, and excitement for the future.
Girls’ football is important because it offers so much more than matches and training. It gives confidence, friendship, and opportunities that can last a lifetime. .
This is about more than just football. The success of the England Women’s team has shown the nation what’s possible — inspiring thousands of girls to believe that the game belongs to them just as much as it does to the boys. Role models like Leah Williamson, Mary Earps, and Lauren James have helped spark a movement, and we want to carry that same spirit into our own community.
We want every girl who pulls on a Wessington shirt to feel proud, supported, and excited for what’s ahead — whether they dream of being the next Lioness or just want to enjoy the game with their friends.
It’s still early days, but our Wildcats section is growing fast. Our U7s and U8s are recruiting new players, while our Year 1 girls are already looking forward to indoor sessions at Aylestone School. And this is only the beginning — we’re committed to creating more opportunities for girls at every age group, so that no one ever feels football isn’t for them.
